Back to the Future is an American science fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis, released in 1985.

The plot follows teenager Marty McFly's journey into the past aboard a time machine built by Doctor Emmett Brown from a DeLorean DMC-12 car. Starting from 1985 and propelled into 1955, Marty, aided by the 1955 "Doc", must resolve the temporal paradoxes caused by his interventions in the past and find a way to make the machine work to return to his original time.

The commercial success of the film led to two sequels, Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Back to the Future Part III (1990), forming a trilogy, and the development of a commercial franchise across various media.
